Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica. When properly prepared with seasonings, saltfish and tomato and served with roasted breadfruit, it makes a very tasty dish.
However, Ackee is used for more than just preparing meals, during world war II when there was an interruption in manufacturing, and essentials such as laundry soap was scarce, many poor Jamaicans resorted to using ackee to make soap.
Ackee soap is very effective in cleansing clothes.
