The Tuna Plant, Optunia, belongs to the cactus family Cactaceae and is also known as prickly pear. The plant grows wildly in very thirst conditions making it able to withstand droughts.
The Tuna plant contains vitamins A, C and E, and is nutrient dense with traces of calcium, potassium and magnesium along with other vitamins and minerals. The plant is used as a mild laxative by boiling and drinking it sugar free. It is also said to be a family of the aloe vera plant. The pear of the plant is edible.
Traditionally, the Tuna plant is used in Jamaica not only as a detox, but also as a common staple in our hair care routine. The plant is proven to strengthen the hair follicles which eventually leads to thicker, healthier hair strands.
