Locust Fruit (Jamaican Stinking Toe)

Hymenaea courbaril, also known as locust fruit or Stinking Toe in Jamaica, grows wildly across the Caribbean and Central and South America. The powdery fruit which is encased in a very hard shell carries a very unpleasant odour. Fortunately, the taste of the fruit is far fetched from its smell. Some persons refuse to even try the fruit due to the very pungent and bilious smell.

Like every other fruit, Stinking toe is loaded with nutrients and minerals such as iron, magnesium and calcium. The fruit is in season between April and July. It makes an delicious and refreshing drink.

Jamaican Saying: When 'tinking toe choke you, nyam aug doodo!
