Bissy or Kola Nut

Most, if not all Jamaicans keep Bissy or Kola Nuts in their homes. Bissy, (Scientific Name: Cola Acuminata), is used in instances of food poisoning, for relieving the effects of poisonous insect bites, for removing toxins from the body or just for a soothing cup of tea.

Benefits of Bissy/Kola Nut

  • improves metabolism

The Bissy/Kola Nut is usually dried and grated, then stored. When used to mitigate the effects of poisoning, the Bissy Powder is boiled and consumed with or without sugar or other sweeteners. However, when the nut is use to make a tea, it is usually consumed in this fashion:

How to Make Bissy Tea

Ingredients
1 tsp Bissy/Kola Nut Powder
1 Cup of Water
Condensed Milk (to taste)
Sugar (to taste)
Nutmeg
1/2 tsp Vanilla

Method
Bring the Water to a rapid boil. Add the Bissy/Kola Nut Powder. Allow to boil for 5 Minutes or until water becomes brown. Remove from flame, pour into your favourite cup; sweeten with Condensed Milk, Sugar, Nutmeg and Vanilla.
