Moringa Tree

The Moringa tree grows in humid/ tropical climates. The plant has very small leaves that are similar in shape to those of a tamarind tree. The plant also has a distinctive and lingering scent. Like the guinea hen weed, the Moringa plant boast a host of medicinal properties.

The plant can be used as tea and is useful in the prevention of the common cold or flu, controlling hypertension, asthmatic conditions and sinusitis. It can also be used for headaches, by rubbing the bush in the palm of the hands and then placing it at the temple. Apart from its use in the prevention and controlling of disease/ viruses the plant is said to be a rich source of vitamins and minerals. Researches are still being conducted in Jamaica on this naturally occurring medicine.

The Plant is touted as a superfood as it is packed with:
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin C
  • Iron
  • Riboflavin (B2)
  • Vitamin A (from beta-carotene)
  • Protein
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Sulphur
And many other nutrients.

The tree produces what are called drumsticks that contain the seeds. The seed of the moringa are used as a remedy to detox the colon. They also contain oils that can be extracted by pressing through an oil extractor. The Moringa oil is beneficial for hair and skin.
